Girls Night In and Chocolate Slug Cake

When I was a kid, I had a sleepover book I loved and wore to death.  I can’t for the life of me remember the name, but it included a horror story about an old woman who turned into a black cat (while incredibly sexist, it also terrified me pretty much half to death!) as well as an amazing chocolate fudge recipe that the Beardys still make during holidays today.

Girls Night In is the adult version of my slumber party book!  Rather than containing scary stories and recipes for chocolate, it contains amazing grown-up crafts projects (cute clutch bags, alphabet charm bracelets) – both are definitely on my to-do list.  To me, there’s nothing better to do on a Saturday night than stay in with my best girlfriends, bake and make crafts (nerdy but fun!) – there’s also a wide variety of projects, from the simple to a bit more complicated.

In the recipes, they range from easy ones that anyone could really whip up to recipes which will satisfy the more experienced baker (even I feel a bit nervous at trying the ruffle cake) to this delicious slug cake – which you can whip up with your friends in half an hour flat (while enjoying Clueless, obviously!)

Chocolate Slug Cake (from Girls Night In)

250g unsalted butter

600g dark chocolate

6 tablespoons golden syrup

400g Nice biscuits (and yes, for the uninitiated – this is indeed a brand of biscuits!)

100g mini marshmallows

120g whole blanched almonds

DSC_0585Melt chocolate and unsalted butter over a low heat in a saucepan.  Mix in Nice biscuits, mini marshmallows and whole blanched almonds.

DSC_0587Lay chocolate in a lined brownie tin (I use baking paper to line it).

DSC_0588Allow to cool to room temperature and then refrigerate overnight.  Cut into small squares!

I’d definitely recommend this book if you’re someone who enjoys home craft projects (like Fran, the Beardy Bestie – she can make a sow’s ear into a silk purse in an hour flat!) or if you’re planning a special ladies only event (like a wedding shower or a craft club).

Girls’ Night In: Craft, Cakes and Cocktails for The Ultimate Party by Hannah Read-Baldrey is published by Quadrille Publishing RRP £16.99.  I received a free copy to review, but all
